چکیده

This paper presents an interactive design interface for threedimensional free-form musical wind instruments. The sound of a wind instrument is governed by the acoustic resonance as a result of complicated interactions of sound waves and internal geometries of the instrument. Thus, creating an original free-form wind instrument by manual methods is a challenging problem. Our interface provides interactive sound simulation feedback as the user edits, allowing exploration of original wind instrument designs. Sound simulation of a 3D wind musical instrument is known to be computationally expensive. To overcome this problem, we first model the wind instruments as a passive resonator, where we ignore coupled oscillation excitation from the mouthpiece. Then we present a novel efficient method to estimate the resonance frequency based on the boundary element method by formulating the resonance problem as a minimum eigenvalue problem. Furthermore, we can efficiently compute an approximate resonance frequency using a new technique based on a generalized eigenvalue problem. The designs can be fabricated using a 3D printer, thus we call the results “printwind instruments” in association with woodwind instruments. We demonstrate our approach with examples of unconventional shapes performing familiar songs. CR Categories: H.5.5 [Information Interface and Presentation]: Sound and Music Computing

Modeling and simulation for SeaWinds-lB system design and performance evaluation

SeaWinds1 B is an spaceborne instrument, under design at the Jet Propulsion J.-aboriitory, to accurately measure the speed and direction of ocean surface winds at high resolutions. SeaWinds-l B consists of a scatterometer and a polarimetric wind radiometer. The scatterometer employs range compression to increase the resolution of its sigma-O measurements. The polanmetric radiometer will be used...

Effect of Different Turbine-generator Shaft Models on the Subsynchronous Resonance Phenomenon in the Double Cage Induction Generator Based Wind Farm

This paper focuses on the turbine-generator shaft models of double-cage Induction Generator (IG) based wind farm and its influence on the sub-synchronous resonance phenomenon. For this purpose, six different shaft models as 6-mass, 4-mass, 3-mass I, 3-mass II, 2-mass and 1-mass models are considered for double-cage IG wind-turbine. By using the linear modal analysis method, the effects of the d...

Modeling Airflow in Urban Form against Sand Accumulation: a Case of Saltation in the Town of Timimoun in Southern Algeria

In our present research, we focus on the modeling of airflow related to natural disasters, such assand accumulation, with urban form studies. The objective is to find which urban form can promote sand passing andreduce as much as possible stagnation of sand in the building area (streets, alleys, etc.). The urban form design will bediscussed through the simulation of airflow by using Computation...
